White House national security spokesman John Kirby firmly defended President Joe Biden’s mental fitness, emphasizing that the president remains “robust” in his role.
This comes despite Biden’s recent mental failures during the first presidential debate and his several press conferences afterwards.
“The president that I see every day, including yesterday a couple of times in the Oval Office, is robust. He’s lucid, he’s clear, he’s direct, and he’s in command of the context and information,” Kirby stated on CNN’s News Central.
Kirby’s remarks come as the Biden administration strives to alleviate concerns about the president’s cognitive abilities, which have intensified in recent months.
Not only that, but there have been calls from Democrat leaders for Biden to step down as the party’s nominee.
As Biden prepares to attend the NATO summit in Washington this week, the event may serve as a significant measure of public perception regarding his mental acuity.
Elaborating on his observations, Kirby shared, “I mean, he was asking me questions yesterday about events in Europe that I simply didn’t have the answers for, and I had to go back and come back to him with some answers.”
“That’s the president that I see every day. That’s the commander in chief that I’ve been serving the last two-and-a-half years.”
Addressing a recent report suggesting Biden no longer schedules events past 8 p.m., Kirby dismissed the claim, asserting that the White House “denied those claims.”
He underscored that Biden’s role as president is “a 24-hour job,” echoing White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s assertion that Biden is working “around the clock.”
Kirby emphasized, “And he also knows that the world doesn’t take a breather after a certain time of day. That things keep going on, just like we saw this weekend in Ukraine, and he’s constantly peppering the team with questions, again, around the clock.”
“That’s the commander in chief that I’ve seen, and more critically, Kate, as the commander in chief, he knows he has to be, and he has been here for the last three-and-a-half years.”
Last week, Jean-Pierre reassured the press that Biden is “absolutely not” considering withdrawing from the 2024 race, and that his focus remains on “moving forward with his campaign.”
In light of the internal debate within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s place on the 2024 ticket, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) described such discussions as “not helpful” and urged for party unity.
When questioned about his personal stance on the pressure for Biden to step aside, Kaine indicated he would reserve his counsel for private conversations with the President.
On Monday, during a telephone interview, Biden challenged Democrats concerned about his electability to “challenge me at the convention” next month.
He also issued a letter to Democratic lawmakers, reaffirming his commitment to remain in the race and urging the party to unite in their efforts to defeat former President Donald Trump.
