In a surprising turn, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough has suggested that the Biden campaign and many Democratic officials believe former President Barack Obama is covertly working to undermine President Joe Biden’s re-election efforts.
Scarborough, who has been a staunch supporter of Biden in the media, did not mince words in his critique of Obama and his associates.
“I will say, one thing we do have to underline here, just so viewers can follow — what’s going on behind the scenes is the Biden campaign and many democratic officials do believe that Barack Obama is quietly working behind the scenes to orchestrate this,” Scarborough commented on the growing doubts within the Democratic Party about Biden’s leadership.
“If Joe Biden believes that, that’s not going to get him out of the race any faster.”
The host also directed criticism towards David Axelrod, a former senior adviser to Obama, who has been vocal in his criticism of Biden since the recent debate.
Scarborough suggested that Axelrod’s attacks only serve to make Biden more determined to stay in the race. “Any time the pod bros say something nasty about Joe Biden, which they have repeatedly said nasty things about Joe Biden, before the debate, after the debate, every time they do that, he digs in a little bit further,” he added, referring to Pod Save America, a podcast hosted by former Obama aides.
“The pathway to Joe Biden graciously stepping aside does not go through the Obamas or the Clintons.”
Scarborough, who maintains a close personal relationship with Biden, disclosed the extent of Biden’s lingering resentment towards Obama, despite their public display of camaraderie.
“Joe Biden is deeply resentful of his treatment under not only the Obama staff but also the way he was pushed aside for Hillary Clinton,” Scarborough revealed. “He’s deeply resentful of those trying to shove him out of the way. He’s always felt like an outsider, always felt like people have looked down upon him.”
According to Scarborough, only a select few individuals have the influence to sway Biden.
These include former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Delaware Senator Ted Kaufman, former Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, former Secretary of State John Kerry, Biden aide Ron Klain, Representative Jim Clyburn, and members of Biden’s family.
Scarborough’s comments come in the wake of a new controversy involving actor George Clooney, who reportedly consulted Obama before publishing an op-ed urging Biden to step down.
Co-host Mika Brzezinski speculated that Obama himself was behind Clooney’s op-ed.
Despite these behind-the-scenes tensions, Obama has publicly expressed his support for Biden following the contentious debate, attributing the performance to an off night.
“Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know,” he said in a post on X. “But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”
However, reports have emerged indicating that Obama is privately expressing concerns about Biden’s capabilities. Despite the former president’s public endorsement, a report from the Washington Post suggested a more critical view behind closed doors.
Scarborough’s revelations underscore the complex and often fraught dynamics within the Democratic Party as it gears up for the upcoming election, highlighting the ongoing struggle for unity and strategic direction.
